Police investigate death of rider after horse ‘bolted’ near farm vehicles

POLICE are investigating the death of a woman in South Yorkshire who fell off her horse while riding past farm vehicles.

The 55-year-old was riding along the B6090 Cortworth Lane in Rotherham in the direction of Greasbrough when the accident happened just before 10am on Sunday.

The woman, who has not been named but is from the village of Wentworth, near Rotherham, suffered a fatal head injury and died at the scene, police said.

Officers are appealing for witnesses and in particular would like to speak to the drivers of any of the farm vehicles that were believed to be in Cortworth Lane at the time.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “There were several agricultural vehicles travelling along Cortworth Lane in the opposite direction towards Wentworth when the horse bolted and dislodged the woman rider.

“The woman, from Wentworth, fell to the ground and sustained a fatal head injury and died at the scene.

“Police are looking for any witnesses to the incident and are trying to identify the drivers of the agricultural vehicles on Cortworth Lane at the time of the incident.”
