Police issue festive thefts warning

CHRISTMAS shoppers in York are being urged to stay on their guard after 30 thefts have been reported in the city centre in the past month alone.

Following the increase in the number of incidents and with an influx of visitors expected into York over the Christmas period, police are urging people to be vigilant.

Pc Steve Skeoch, of the Guildhall safer neighbourhood team which covers York city centre, said: "So far our team has dealt with almost 30 thefts of personal property, including handbags, purses and mobile phones.

"There isn't a particular location or time when the thefts have occurred, so I urge people not to let their guard down when shopping or visiting the city.

"If you do fall prey to this type of crime please ensure that you pass the police as much information as possible, not only about the time and location of the theft but also what has been stolen."

Anyone with any information that could help the police to locate and arrest suspected thieves is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 24 7, or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
