Police job satisfaction rises with their status

A POLICE officers' organisation has called for the results of a staff survey to be taken seriously after it showed senior officers were happier in their work than ranks below them.

Respondents to Humberside Police's first "Have Your Say" survey, a set of 24 questions that will be put annually to all ranks and civilian employees, gave an overall "engagement" rating of 2.84 on a scale of one to four.

The force described the results as "very encouraging", but Humberside Police Federation, which represents officers up to the rank of superintendent, said it wanted to see issues of concern acted on.

Federation chairman, Insp Steve Garmston, said: "Surveys have been done many times before and no difference has been made whatsoever. It's a watching brief for us; we need to try to make sure that what is being communicated this time is taken seriously."

The survey covered six categories – leadership, wellbeing, teamwork, morale, performance and development. Job satisfaction fell almost in line with rank: with chief officers scoring 3.59; superintendents and comparable civilian staff 3.22 / 3.01; chief inspectors 3.01; inspectors 2.92 / 2.99; sergeants 2.79 / 2.85; constables 2.75 / 2.89; specials 2.92 and volunteers 3.35.

A total of 2,922 people, 62 per cent of the workforce, took part.

Andrea Wood, talent and career services manager, said: "It should be remembered the results are nothing to do with performance. What they are is a temperature check to generate dialogue."
