Police learn from US counterparts

Police in Bradford have started working with their counterparts in the United States to learn more about mutual concerns.

Neighbourhood police in Tong and Wyke have twinned with the Cincinnati “District One” neighbourhood team in Ohio to share information about local policing.

Neighbourhood policing team Sergeant Brian Watson, who spent five months in the US city in 2002 studying community problem-oriented policing, has organised the link.

“Their model was designed to tackle community problems through a partnership between the employees and the residents of the city,” explained Sgt Watson.

“Since my visit nine years ago, I have remained in contact with officers from District One and this really prompted the idea of a twinning scheme.

“At the time, community oriented policing was a new concept, but we have really bridged that gap here through the introduction of neighbourhood policing across the country.

“As there are some close comparisons between the two styles of policing, I realised the possible benefits of sharing our experiences.”
