Police officer arrested after man 'doused with burning liquid' in Barnsley cells

A POLICE custody detention officer has been arrested after a man claimed he suffered burns to his groin when a liquid was deliberately poured over him in a Yorkshire police station.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is managing an investigation by South Yorkshire Police into the allegations which followed the arrest of a 26-year-old man for a public order offence in Barnsley on May 30.

The man claims a liquid was deliberately poured over him while he was in police custody at Barnsley Police Station.

The commission said the man was treated in hospital for burns and blisters to his groin.

In a statement, the IPCC said a custody detention officer employed by South Yorkshire Police was arrested on June 3 on suspicion of wounding with intent.

He has been released on police bail.

The IPCC said it is now managing an investigation by South Yorkshire Police's Professional Standards Department.

IPCC Commissioner Nicholas Long said: "This is a very serious allegation and South Yorkshire Police has responded quickly and appropriately in arresting their member of staff.

"We will now provide independent oversight by managing the ongoing investigation."
