Police officers disciplined in taxi driver abuse case

TWO West Yorkshire police officers have been disciplined after a row with a cabbie about a taxi fare.

Taxi driver Mahroof Hussain says he was subjected to a torrent of foul language and drunken abuse after picking up the pair who had been on a night out in Leeds.

The father of three from Leeds called 999 and drove to a police station. It was only then they admitted they were off-duty police constables. An investigation was carried out by West Yorkshire Police and the force has now sent Mr Hussain a letter of apology.

The incident flared after Mr Hussain picked up the pair from a bar in Call Lane on May 12.

When Mr Hussain, 48, asked for payment in advance, one of the officers swore and claimed to have already paid.

"They started shouting at me. I was worried and scared. So I dialled 999 and then drove to Holbeck police station."

In a letter to Mr Hussain, Chief Supt Sarah Brown, of the Force's Professional Standards Department, said that both officers "admitted that their standards of professional behaviour had fallen way below those expected".

She added: "Both officers subsequently apologised for their behaviour and stated that they felt ashamed and embarrassed by their actions and it would never happen again."
