Police said additional resources will be made to tackle the issues in the community.

Operation Duxford, launched by South Yorkshire Police last year, aims to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour, protect vulnerable people and engage with communities in order to provide reassurance and make them feel safer where they live.

Chief Inspector Mark James, from Barnsley, said: “After an early morning briefing for officers and staff, we have already executed a number of warrants this morning across Barnsley.

“Throughout today, you can expect to see an increased police presence in the district and in particularly in the town centre, around the interchange and in Kendray and Goldthorpe.

“We will be focusing on tackling antisocial behaviour and criminal damage, as we know this has been an issue in the areas mentioned.

“We already deploy numerous resources to tackle these issues, as well as working alongside partner agencies such as the council, and Operation Duxford allows us to utilise further resources to have a dedicated day of action to apprehend offenders and further engage with the community.

“Activity will continue throughout the day, with ongoing patrols in the town centre, work alongside partners to tackle issues relating to potential overcrowding, as well as further arrest warrants.

“If you see us out and about, please do come and speak to us. We want to hear what issues are affecting you where you live so that we can do something about it.”

The force will be posting updates throughout the day using the #OpDuxford hashtag on Twitter.
