Police oppose call for repeat music event after man left with broken leg

Police have opposed a license for a music event after violence at a concert for Eastern Europeans at the same venue in Bradford led to a man almost losing his leg.

During the singing, an argument broke out which led to two men being injured, one seriously.

The victim suffered a badly broken leg and he had to remain in hospital for some time.

The trouble broke out at around 3.45am on March 18 at The Venue in Sunbridge Road.

West Yorkshire Police are now opposing an application for a temporary event notice at the premises.

A police report to Bradford Council says officers attending the incident were met with a “hostile atmosphere” and there was the danger of “retribution” and serious disorder if a similar event takes place on April 8-9.

Police said witnesses to the assault had not come forward but that family members of the injured man were aware of the alleged attacker.

The report says that the previous event, advertised as an Eastern European Community Cultural Event, was not in fact licensed and no temporary events notice was in place.

Councillors on the Shipley licensing panel will meet today to discuss the temporary event notice request.
