Mr Bennett, who was believed to be married and visiting the park with family, was treated by ambulance staff at the scene but was pronounced dead shortly after.

The IPCC said its staff have met members of Mr Bennett’s family at his home in Pudsey to explain the investigation.

Cindy Butts, the IPCC’s commissioner for West Yorkshire, said: “This is a tragic incident in which an elderly man lost his life.

Mr Bennett’s family have said they do not wish to comment.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a single police officer has been suspended from driving pending the outcome of an investigation.
