Police pledge crackdown on speeding bikers

A POLICE FORCE has pledged to wage war on speeding motorcyclists after five bikers were arrested yesterday in connection with a double fatal crash.

The five men were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after 20 North Yorkshire Police officers carried out simultaneous raids on their homes at 6.15am yesterday.

The men, aged 25-36, from West Yorkshire, were last night being questioned over the deaths of Dean Slater, 40, and his wife, Helen, 37, who were killed on the A162 near Tadcaster in August. The couple, who were on the same Yamaha bike, were in a group of six motorcycles when they were involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Vectra.

Assistant Chief Constable Sue Cross said her force did not want to "demonise" bikers. But she added: "What we are not willing to accept is people coming to our county, riding dangerously and irresponsibly and putting their own and other people's lives at risk."
