Police to probe abuse claims in TV programme

Police in North Yorkshire last night said they would like to speak to people who took part in a TV programme regarding historic sex abuse allegations made against the late Peter Jaconelli, a former mayor of Scarborough.

The appeal follows allegations made on BBC1’s Inside Out screened on February 10.

In a statement released yesterday, North Yorkshire Police said it was “considering the content
of the programme, its effect on previous matters and the potential need for any future investigative work that would best serve the interests of those directly affected.

“In so doing, North Yorkshire Police would encourage those individuals who took part in the programme, who were the subject of direct contact with the late Mr Jaconelli, to get in touch as soon as possible in order that their allegations and wishes are fully and properly considered.”

North Yorkshire Police can be contacted via the 101 number, stating the call is for the attention of Det Supt Steve Smith.
