Police probe ‘suspicious’ death of woman found collapsed near market

A POLICE investigation has been launched into the “suspicious death” of a woman who was found collapsed in a Sheffield city centre street yesterday morning.

The 60-year-old woman died in hospital after being discovered lying in the street at about 6am.

She was collapsed near Castle Market, on the pedestrianised area of Waingate.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The police investigation is in its early stages, with 
the death being treated as suspicious at this stage as a matter of routine.

“Any witnesses should call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 111 of Friday, May 10.

Police stood on guard 
yesterday morning around the area on Waingate and Castle Street, which had been cordoned off.

Much of Sheffield’s ageing Castle Markets complex is currently vacant, as the market is due to close for good in the autumn.

A new indoor market is under construction at the other end of Sheffield city centre, on The Moor, and it set to open before Christmas this year.

Plans to then demolish Castle Market to reveal the medieval remains beneath, and redevelop it as a tourist destination, have been suggested
