Police quiz helps firms avoid being targets of crime

Mark Branagan

police have launched two new schemes to help hard-pressed local businesses avoid being targetted by criminals at a time when the employers need every penny to survive.

An online questionnaire is now available on the North Yorkshire Police website which helps bosses to evaluate their existing security measures and receive advice on how to improve their current arrangements.

The questionnaire asks 64 questions about security at businesses premises, such whether the exterior of the property is well maintained, and whether shutters or burglar alarms are protecting the premises when shut. Pc Helen Pointon, of York’s Guildhall Safer Neighbour- hood Team, said: “Thieves should not be allowed to profit from targeting businesses who just can’t afford the loss to their takings.

“I would urge everyone to take the questionnaire and take on board the advice it offers.

“Just making simple alterations to your security measures can make a big difference and deter thieves from targetting your premises”

Pc Pointon is also launching “coffee with a copper” at various businesses premises in York city centre.

“The face-to-face meetings offer firms a high profile police presence to deter offenders and allows the public greater accessibility to the police.

“By making ourselves more accessible to them, we can ensure that they have all the assistance they need to secure their premises and ensure that they don’t suffer the distress and inconvenience of becoming victims of crime.”

The questionnaire, which takes 30 minutes to complete, acts as a risk assessment and the feedback advises business owners on shop floor layout, CCTV footage, adequate lighting outside premises, burglar alarms and other security techniques.
