Police release new images of student fee protest suspects

Police investigating acts of violence during the student fees protests in central London have released new photographs of suspects and are calling on members of the public to help identify those who took part.

The disorder came amid controversial plans at the end of last year, now approved by MPs, to almost triple the cap on tuition fees from 2012 which sparked massive protests around the country.

Police have released a dozen new images captured by CCTV in Parliament Square, Trafalgar Square and Millbank on November 24 and December 9 when thousands of people took to the streets ahead of the key Commons vote.

Two of the pictures taken at Millbank, where protests were focused on the Conservative Party headquarters, are of men who were captured in less clear images previously issued by the force.

Operation Malone, the Met investigation into the student protests, has already seen more than 200 arrests and officers are continuing to trawl hours of CCTV footage to identify those responsible for the disorder.

On Thursday, Charlie Gilmour, the son of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, was charged with violent disorder and theft of a mannequin leg in London on December 9.

The 21-year-old Cambridge University student was one of seven people charged in connection with the demonstrations and will appear at City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court on February 10.

A further five people received a caution or reprimand.
