Police renew appeal over girl’s fire death

POLICE have made a new appeal for information on the murder of Barnsley teenager Lindsey Scholes on the 10th anniversary of her death.

On September 8, 2001, the 17-year-old was staying with friends at 86 Milgate Street in Royston when a fire was deliberately started at the door of the house.

Lindsey was rescued from the blaze but died from her injuries two days later in hospital.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Lindsey was rescued by firefighters from the first floor of the house, however she had already suffered from the fire and smoke fumes.

“She suffered 18 per cent burns and smoke inhalation. Late on Monday, September 10, 2001, Lindsey Chezine Scholes, from Queensway in Royston, sadly died.

“Detectives believe accelerants were used to start the fire and there was no clear motive for the attack.”

A number of people have been arrested in connection with the investigation but, so far, no one has been charged with Lindsey’s murder.
