Police slam car vandals over trail of destruction

POLICE have condemned a group of mindless vandals in York in the wake of a trail of destruction that has cost car owners thousands of pounds.

North Yorkshire Police say eight vehicles in the Heworth area have been targeted by yobs running over the top of them and stamping on the windscreens in just one night.

Officers say the crime spree started in Burnholme Avenue before the group made their way to the junction of Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue taking in a number of other streets along the way.

Police believe that the first vehicle was damaged at around 10pm on Saturday night and yesterday launched an appeal to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area to contact them with information.

Pc Mike Brocken, of Heworth Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “It appears that the offenders have been running over vehicles or deliberately stamping on their windscreens.

“This trail of destruction has amounted to thousands of pounds in repair costs to the victims, not to mention the money they will lose having to take time off work to get the damage repaired.

“I am appealing to anyone with information about this mindless act of vandalism to contact the police as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, York Police yesterday launched an appeal for the return of a stolen camera which contains irreplaceable photographs of a local woman’s 12-week-old son, taken as she was getting the baby out of the car.

The camera was in the 30-year-old victim’s green corduroy handbag which was taken from the driveway of her home off Holgate Road sometime between 5.30pm and 7pm on Sunday.

Pc Nicky Manning said: “She is obviously very upset by the theft of her camera which contains a lot of very sentimental pictures of her newborn son.”

Anyone with information on either incident should contact 08456060247.
