Police station being demolished as part of city centre regeneration

Work is under way to demolish a former police station in Bradford city centre to prepare for a £24.4m park.

The site will eventually house a holding tank for a 4,200 sq m mirror pool – the largest city centre water feature in the UK – at the heart of the six-acre park.

Councillor Adrian Naylor, Bradford Council's executive member for regeneration and economy, said: "The former police station demolition is a significant point not only for the City Park but also the city's regeneration. I think this gives people an idea of the scale of the changes we're making to the city centre and the ambition we have to create a 'park in the city'.

"The City Park is about more than creating an attractive urban environment, it's about social and economic sustainability, economic investment, tourism and communities.

"The scheme is seen by its backers as a critical step forward for Bradford in creating a city centre which will attract the investment and businesses Bradford needs."

Tearing down the former police station is expected to take up to three weeks.

It is hoped that work on the park and mirror pool will be completed by next summer.

The scheme is being funded by Bradford Council, Yorkshire Forward and the Regional Transport Board.
