Police step up biker safety campaign

A CAMPAIGN to prevent bikers being seriously injured or killed on North Yorkshire's roads is being stepped up by police.

The county's extensive network of scenic countryside roads has meant that North Yorkshire has long been a magnet for motorcyclists, although concerns have been expressed over the number of biker fatalities.

Seven motorcyclists riding bikes over 125cc died on North Yorkshire's roads in the first six months of last year, the same number as for the whole of 2008.

Police have warned that bikers need to undertake additional training as machines continue to get faster and more powerful, and the North Yorkshire force is linking up with the 95 Alive road safety partnership to offer a series of Bikesafe workshops.

The workshops cost just 50 and consist of two modules which take place on Sundays from 9.30am until 4.30pm on designated weekends between March and August.
