Police Trust welcomes funding applications

COMMUNITY groups in West Yorkshire are being invited to apply for grants of up to £500 each from the West Yorkshire Police Community Trust.

The county's Trust, which has distributed almost 800,000 since it was established in 1996, is now seeking grant applications from community and voluntary groups as well as charities and other non-profitable organisations that can make a positive difference to their communities.

Grants ranging from 250 to 500 will be given to help fund projects or activities that address "Policing Pledge" priorities identified by local people.

Funding for the grants is generated through fundraising and by seizing assets from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Last year's grant recipients included Chapeltown Football Youth Development Centre, Leeds, who were awarded 500 to develop a gym which went on to attract hard to reach young people into a positive learning environment.

Wakefield Sea Cadets were also given 420 to upgrade their facilities.

The Hope Baptist Church in Hebden Bridge and the Fryston Angling Club in Pontefract were also among the winning groups.

Jane Mills, head of strategic partnerships for the local policing department, said: "The Trust has supported hundreds of local community groups and small charities across West Yorkshire over the years, helping them to make a real difference to the lives of others. The Force is proud to support this smaller grants programme, which runs twice a year, as feedback has shown that a small amount of funding is often all that is needed to make a huge and positive impact on communities."

All applications must be submitted to the Community Trust by Friday February 19 and must be endorsed by an officer from the local neighbourhood policing team.

The organisers suggest that neighbourhood police teams are contacted before the end of this month so their endorsements can be guaranteed before the closing date.

Applications are available by emailing [email protected] or phoning 01924 292646.

Applicants will be notified of the outcome by April 9.
