Police urge owners to register with horsewatch

POLICE are urging horse and pony owners to sign up to a new scheme aimed at tackling equine crime.

Humberside Police have launched Horsewatch, an initiative to support horse owners by providing advice and information help prevent crime.

PC Shaun Bagley, who adopted the idea for the force, said: "Fortunately, equine related crime is relatively low in the Humberside policing area. However, it is very important that every effort is made to continue to reduce the opportunity for this type of crime to occur.

"In the last two years only four horses have been reported stolen and thankfully all were recovered and one person charged with theft.

"Humberside Police recognises the importance of supporting members of the equine community in creating secure environments for their horses, equipment and vehicles."

A website has been created for people to register their horses, ponies and tack with the police.

The site offers crime prevention advice specific to their needs and has an appeal for information section, informing people of recent thefts, suspicious activity or trends that have been picked up on.

The first person to register was Jane Wilson from North Newbald, who used to run a similar scheme. She said: "I am extremely happy Humberside Police has taken over the baton and will take forward Horsewatch so it can continue to provide people with the steps needed to protect their valuable horses.

"I have registered my horse on the site and believe it is vital others also register their horses and expensive tack. The website is very easy to use and I will keep looking at it to learn of any thefts in my area so I can stay vigilant and protect my horse."
