Police in urgent appeal to trace owners after two hurt in dog attacks

A black cat had to be put to sleep and its owner was treated in hospital after a dog attack in York.

Police have issued an appeal for help in tracing the dog’s owner after the incident involving the brown Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Officers said it was being walked without a lead in Townend Street in the Groves area of the city at around 5.10pm on Tuesday, May 7, when it attacked Buffy, a black cat who lived with her owner in Bedale House, in the property’s communal gardens.

The dog grabbed the cat in its mouth causing injuries to its spine and rear. As the cat’s owner tried to intervene, grabbing the dog
by its collar, the animal bit her, causing puncture wounds to her foot.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101.

The appeal came as officers in East Yorkshire released details of a dog attack in which a school caretaker needed four stitches to his arm.

The animal jumped up at Steve Mullenger, 52, as he got out of his car at Tickton School near Beverley on Good Friday.

He tried to restrain the dog and managed to get hold of its collar but was bitten on the arm.

The dog was black, about 18 inches tall, had a docked tail, and was wearing a distinctive black webbed collar with silver rings attached.

Pc Martin Pepper said: “I have almost ruled out the possibility the dog came from the village of Tickton, and believe this could have been a stray or a dog which had left its owner near the fields close-by.”

Anyone who may be able to help is asked to contact Humberside Police on 101, quoting log number 288 of 29/03/13.
