Police use Facebook to contact theft victims

POLICE are turning to social networking in an attempt to reunite burglary victims with their stolen property by posting pictures of recovered loot on the internet.

York police have made individual images of 200 items which were recovered during Operation Maelstrom available to view on North Yorkshire Police's Facebook page.

More than 150 cycles are among the collection of stolen goods, which also includes laptops, mini-motos, games consoles, chainsaws and a lawnmower.

Crime victims are invited to look through the images and contact police if they see an item that belongs to them.

Det Con Dave Burrell said: "Operation Maelstrom has been very successful in apprehending people involved in crime throughout the City of York.

"During the operation we have managed to recover a large amount of stolen property which we would very much like to return to whoever it belongs to.

"I would urge people to have a look at the images on our Facebook page and contact us if they spot something they think might belong to them."

To view the images visit www.northyorkshire.police.uk/maelstrom which links directly to the Facebook page where the pictures are stored.

Anyone who sees anything that belongs to them, should make a note of the image number and contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 24 7 quoting Operation Maelstrom.

Posters are also being displayed around the city urging people to visit the site and identify any items that they recognise.

Operation Maelstrom is an continuing police investigation targeting people involved in the handling of stolen property and related crime.
