Police warning after conman stole cash from woman, 95

A conman stole cash from the home of a 95-year-old woman in Sheffield.

Police said a man posing as a worker visited the home of the elderly victim at around 10am on Monday in Daisy Walk, Beighton.

He told the woman that some cables needed to be laid in her back garden, and she invited him inside before walking through to her garden area.

PC Gareth Bryant, the investigating officer, said: “At this point, we believe that the man left the front door ajar behind them. He has then kept the woman talking in the garden before suddenly making an excuse and leaving.

“When she has gone back into the house, the woman found that a quantity of cash had been taken from the house.

"The man is described as white, in his 30s, about 5ft 7ins tall, of medium build and reportedly spoke with a local accent. He is said to have been wearing a yellow hi-vis jacket and a black beanie style hat. He was also carrying a clipboard.

“Most people who come to your door are genuine, however it’s unfortunate that some do come with the intention of tricking their way into your home to steal from you.

“We’re continuing to investigate this incident and would like to hear anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area at around that time."

Police are warning residents to be vigilant when confronted by conmen posing as workers.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
