Police worries over changes at city pub

PUB bosses will be summoned to face councillors over plans to build an outdoor drinking and smoking area at a suburban pub after police objected in a bid to “prevent crime and disorder”.

Punch Taverns has applied to Sheffield Council to change the layout of the Yew Tree Inn, in Loxley New Road, Sheffield, to allow more space for its customers and says it will make all reasonable efforts to eliminate noise.

But both South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Council’s environmental health department have attempted to block the plans on the grounds of nuisance.

In documents to be examined by Sheffield’s licencing board next week, a police spokesman says: “We have serious concerns regarding the proposed outside smoking and drinking area.

“We have already received a number of noise complaints and consider that the proposal is likely to give rise to public nuisance.”
