Police's lessons in Polish to build community links

Police officers are being taught simple Polish phrases in a bid to break down barriers with the community, a force said yesterday.

Officers from Bedfordshire Police will start the 10-week course tomorrow, spending two hours each week being taught the language.

The course is being run by the Polish British Integration Centre in Bedford to help neighbourhood police officers and community support officers communicate with the growing Polish community.

Officers will learn basic phrases, including asking someone their name or if they have any injuries, to help them in incidents.

Inspector Gavin Hughes-Rowland said: "It is important for the Polish community to see us working towards improving communication with them and that we wish to further build up relationships with them."
