Policymakers and charities set to discuss health inequalities

NATIONAL policymakers are to meet with Yorkshire charities next month to address health inequalities in the region.

The chief executive of Public Health England, Duncan Selbie, and James Plunkett, director of policy and development at influential think-tank the Resolution Foundation, will be among the keynote speakers at Involve Yorkshire and Humber’s annual policy conference.

Around 100 delegates are expected to attend the ‘Health and Wellbeing: Making Equality a Reality’ talks at Wakefield Town Hall.

Seminar topics include people and communities in rural Yorkshire; welfare reform and local government; public health in Yorkshire; and support for carers and caring in the region.

Judy Robinson, chief executive of Involve, an umbrella organisation representing the 15,000 voluntary and community sector organisations, said: “Involve Yorkshire & Humber is a bridge between national decision makers and the people delivering change on the ground. The Government talks about equality and it is high on the health agenda, but we would now like to see these good intentions turned into real policy commitments from all political parties leading up to the next general election.”

Other speakers include Evelyn Asante-Mensah, former chief executive of the Black Health Agency; Nick Chase, policy, programme and project manager at Action with Communities in Rural England, Neil Irving, assistant director of policy and partnerships at North Yorkshire County Council; and Dr Stephen Morton, director at the Public Health England centre for Yorkshire and Humber.

Tickets to the event, on September 12, are available from Involve on 0113 394 2300 or [email protected].
