Politicians cook homeless breakfast

THREE councillors were set to serve breakfast to homeless people this morning in a bid to raise awareness of the problems of people living on the streets.

Today marks World Homelessness Day and Coun Harry Harpham, Sheffield Council’s housing and regeneration spokesman, was set to visit the city’s Cathedral Archer Project, for the event.

He will be joined by his cabinet adviser Isobel Bowler and Coun Ben Curran, who also participated in last month’s Big Sleep Out event, to raise funds for the project which offers help to the homeless.

The council’s ruling Labour group has voiced concerns about rising homelessness in Sheffield, pointing to figures that show there was a 38 per cent increase in homelessness last year – nearly four times higher than the national average of 10 per cent.

Coun Harpham, who won approval from all councillors to work on solving the homelessness issue at a meeting of Sheffield Council last Wednesday said: “I think we will all agree that the Archer Project and others like it throughout the city do fantastic work in providing important services for many people and we should applaud them.”
