Politics and policing at cathedral

SPEAKERS from the world of politics and policing are going to Wakefield Cathedral to give free lunchtime talks.

The project called Cathedral Conversations is part of the cathedral’s attempt to put the building back at the heart of the city as a forum for all.

They will open today with Labour veteran Tony Benn. His subject is Our Choice: God or Mammon.

He will be followed on Wednesday, February 24 by West Yorkshire’s Chief Constable, Sir Norman Bettison, who will talk about The Bobby on the Beat while Joanne Roney, chief executive of Wakefield Council will take the floor on March 10 to speak on A Vision for Wakefield.

Entrance is free, tea and coffee are available and the audience are welcome to bring their lunch to eat. There is a voluntary collection to cover expenses.

Cathedral Conversations builds on the success of the Cathedral’s successful programme of Tuesday lunchtime concerts.

The Dean of Wakefield, Jonathan Greener, said: “We are very excited by these lunchtime events. This is where we want the cathedral to be, right at the heart of its city.”
