Action urged on ‘scandal’ of empty homes

THE Government has been urged to tackle the “scandal” of thousands of homes sitting empty when demand for affordable housing has soared.

In a Westminster debate, Bradford East Liberal Democrat MP David Ward said there was an urgent need to tackle poor quality housing and the lack of affordable homes if the city was to prosper. It has 4,000 empty homes and 6,000 people waiting for social housing.

“Ministers need to recognise the unique challenges this area faces and make sure that the right policy tools are in place to deliver quality affordable housing in places like Bradford,” said Mr Ward. “We need a housing policy that works for everywhere, not just London and the South East.”
