Apology from MP in ‘wrong village’ gaffe

A LABOUR MP hailed the beautiful waterfalls and caves of a Yorkshire beauty spot - in a speech to the wrong village.

Bishop Auckland MP Helen Goodman spoke to baffled constituents at a classic car show in Ingleton, west of Darlington, little realising her script was about the village of the same name near Settle.

The Oxford-educated politician spoke about the village connection to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the famous waterfalls.

Yesterday she told The Yorkshire Post: “It was a mistake and I’m sorry about it.”

She admitted: “I didn’t know there were two Ingletons.”

In Ingleton, Yorkshire, there was some sympathy for the MP.

Parish councillor Sue Brown said: “You feel sorry for somebody for their embarrassment. I once visited the other Ingleton out of curiosity; it is like a hamlet and very small.”
