BAE workers to meet PM over job cuts

A delegation of workers will hand a petition in to the Prime Minister in Downing Street as they appeal to him to help prevent 899 redundancies at the defence giant’s Brough plant.

More than 100 workers, their families and unions are also expected to lobby MPs with a rally being held in Westminster.

The petition which is to be handed to Mr Cameron includes photographs of the workers whose jobs are at stake and calls on the Government to do at all it can to protect them, arguing that they are vital to the future of British manufacturing.

The firm announced the planned redundancies in September as part of widespread cuts to its military aircraft division, but MPs have been highly critical of the move.

Tory MP David Davis and Labour MP Alan Johnson, both former frontbenchers for their parties, have led the political campaign to get the company to re-think.

Unite national officer Ian Waddell said: “The Government cannot sit on its hands and allow these highly skilled jobs to disappear.”
