Bridge toll increase wins approval

MINISTERS have backed the 11 per cent increase in Humber Bridge tolls despite criticism that it was a “tax on local people and local businesses”.

Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin questioned the 30p toll increase coming in to force in October – taking fares to £3 – but Liberal Democrat Transport Minister Norman Baker said there was “no reason” for Ministers to take issue with the toll increase which was approved after a public inquiry.

Diana Johnson, Labour MP for Hull North, criticised the Liberal Democrats for running a “Ditch the Humber Bridge Debt” campaign during the general election given Mr Baker’s refusal to step in now, and urged him to re-think his stance.

But Mr Baker said the Government had agreed to offer a reduced interest rate on the Bridge Board’s debt, meaning it will save £48m over five years.
