Call to let asylum seekers work call

Asylum seekers who have waited more than six months for a decision in their case would be given the right to work under legal changes proposed by a Liberal Democrat peer.

Lord Roberts of Llandudno said the ban on asylum seekers taking a job means they are forced to rely on taxpayer-funded handouts.

He said official figures show more than 4,400 people seeking asylum have been waiting for their status to be resolved for more than six months.

Lord Roberts will introduce a Bill to change 1971’s Immigration Act in the House of Lords today.

He said: “Allowing asylum seekers permission to work would not only save taxpayers money, but it would afford them the dignity of earning a living and reduce dependency on state handouts.”
