Calls for employers to introduce Living Wage

ONE of York’s MPs has called for major employers to boost salaries to help a quarter of the city’s workers who are on low wages.

The Labour MP for York Central, Hugh Bayley, has urged the city’s biggest employers to introduce the Living Wage, which would ensure workers receive £7.65 per hour. While York remains one of the North’s most desirable cities, its economy is centred on the relatively poorly paid tourism and hospitality sectors.

Mr Bayley said: “I often meet people who are struggling to pay their bills and feed their families in the current economic climate. The introduction of the Living Wage is helping families to escape poverty and have a higher standard of living.”

He yesterday visited the York Citizens’ Advice Bureau, one of five major organisations in the city recognised as Living Wage employers in the last year. The others are York Council, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Aviva and York CVS.
