Cameron to
host Romney
at Number 10

Prime Minister David Cameron will meet US presidential
candidate Mitt Romney when he visits London later this week, Downing Street confirmed yesterday.

The Republican candidate is using the trip to raise campaign funds and canvass for support among London’s large American community.

He will meet the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street on Thursday, although it is not yet clear whether the two men will appear for photographs on the front doorstep.

Earlier this year, Mr Cameron declined to meet the eventual victor in the French presidential election, Francois Hollande, during a campaign visit to London, in what was widely seen as a snub to the Socialist candidate.

At the time of the Hollande visit, Mr Cameron’s official spokesman said that the “usual procedure” was for the Prime Minister not to meet candidates in elections in foreign countries, although this is not understood to be a hard and fast rule.

Mr Romney, who is trailing Democrat president Barack Obama by a narrow margin in the latest polls, is also due to meet Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg on Thursday.
