A £15bn road improvement plan will be included in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement next month, the Prime Minister will say in a speech to the CBI.

“This will be nothing less than a roads revolution – one which will lead to quicker journey times, more jobs, and businesses boosted right across the country,” Mr Cameron will say.

The Government’s “Roads Investment Strategy” will cover the five years of the next Parliament and lead to “hundreds of extra lane miles on our motorways and trunk roads”, he will promise.

Neither Downing Street nor the Department for Transport were immediately able to say which new Yorkshire projects would feature in the plan beyond improvements to “transpennine roads in the North of England”.

But the Department for Transport said the £15bn figure would include schemes previously announced including improvements to the A63 Castle Street, in Hull, and upgrades to the M1.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg is pushing for improvements to the M62 and the Woodhead Pass between Manchester and Sheffield to feature in the Government’s spending plans.
