Clegg relishes defence of local product

NICK Clegg has taken time out from the scandal enveloping his party to defend one of Yorkshire’s best-loved products.

The Deputy Prime Minister hit out at a Labour MP who suggested Henderson’s Relish is designed to fool people into thinking it is actually Worcestershire Sauce.

Lewisham MP Jim Dowd told the Commons how a waiter had brought him a bottle of the famous Yorkshire condiment when he had asked for some Worcestershire Sauce in a local pub, and claimed Henderson’s came in a bottle “amazingly” similar to Lea & Perrin’s

“But it was something from Sheffield, from somewhere called Henderson’s – whoever they were,” the London MP said.

In a letter to Mr Dowd, Mr Clegg – the MP for Sheffield Hallam – pointed out that Henderson’s Relish has been made in Sheffield for more than a century.

“Given the history behind Henderson’s Relish, I hope you can appreciate Sheffielders are fiercely proud of it,” the DPM wrote. “We are confident it would win in any blind taste test, whether at a pub in Blackheath or anywhere else.”
