The Lib Dems want customers to be able to switch energy suppliers within 24 hours and those on prepay meters to move onto smart meters.

Companies winning a customer’s business will be forced to take responsibility for the smooth switch over from their previous supplier.

The five-point consumer plan unveiled today also includes a commitment to end above-inflation fare increases, matching a commitment made by the Conservatives.

Mr Clegg said: “Competition, choice and a fair deal for consumers is the backbone of a stronger economy, yet the balance of power still remains in the favour of big business.

“We want to give power back to consumers and commuters, making sure people are not ripped off by sky high energy bills and excessively high rail fares.

“Our five point plan will deliver more choice, less hassle and more money back in people’s pockets.”

The plan includes a commitment to “collective switching” agreements so more consumers can benefit from group discounts on their utility bills.

Experts say switching suppliers can help some utilities custimers save as much as £200 a year.
