Contractor to take wheel on city roads

RESPONSIBILITY for improving and maintaining Sheffield’s roads and pavements will officially pass into private hands on Monday when the city council transfers the service over to contractor Amey – at a cost of £2bn to the public purse.

The Government is providing £1.2bn and Sheffield Council a further £800m for a 25-year contract under which Amey will be responsible for improving and maintaining the city’s roads, pavements, bridges, street lights and streetscene.

Amey is replacing the council’s Street Force staff though all 480 workers are crossing over to the new employer. The new set-up will be called Streets Ahead.

Under the terms of the deal, the contractor will be responsible for carrying out improvements over the first five years and then be required to maintain the improved condition for the next 20 years.

Sheffield Council’s Labour Leader, Julie Dore, said: “The start of Streets Ahead works in Sheffield is one that so many people have been waiting for. We have known for many years that the state of our roads has been the number one issue with residents and businesses.

“Seeing the new Streets Ahead service roll out will be a proud day for all residents and businesses across the city. This major piece of work will contribute to the wider regeneration of our city and is a major investment in Sheffield’s future.”
