Council could pay ‘living wage’
YORK Council will consider a proposal to give its employees a living wage of £7.45 an hour by next April and its suppliers and partners by 2014.
There are 573 employees who are not currently paid the wage at the council and members of its cabinet are being asked to agree spending £338,000 to provide it for an initial 12 months. During this time it will work with trade unions to develop plans to embed the living wage within its grading and pay structures.
The living wage is the amount judged necessary to provide an adequate standard of living.
The proposal, which would see money used from the council’s Economic Infrastructure Fund (EIF), will be discussed by members of the authority when they meet on Tuesday.
