Council to help fund Work Programme

COUNCIL bosses in a Yorkshire city yesterday said they would use their own funds to supplement to Government’s much-criticised Work Programme, to “ensure it delivers”.

Labour-run Sheffield Council said it had joined with the city’s Chamber of Commerce to “expand and improve the delivery of the Work Programme” by encouraging more business start-ups.

The authority will use funding from its Keep Sheffield Working initiative to provide business support and advice for unemployed people considering self-employment.

The programme will be delivered through the Chamber’s enterprise agency subsidiary, SENTA, using council cash.

Business spokesman Coun Leigh Bramall, said: “This demonstrates the determination of the council to maximise the tight resources available to support long-term business growth and jobs.”
