Directors’ body attacks red tape

The departing head of a business group has criticised the Government over the “burdens” being imposed on industry by red tape.

Miles Templeman, who has stood down as director general of the Institute of Directors after seven years said employment regulation was a prime example where “no progress” had been made in reducing the regulation burden.

The coalition had some well-meant initiatives, said Mr Templeman, but he added that the situation was “getting worse”, citing the Agency Workers Directive which would add up to £2bn onto business, and next year’s auto-enrolment of pensions, which he claimed would cost firms £3bn.

“The government should be helping businesses to create jobs, not hammering businesses with new rules,“ he said.
