Disruption fears over Olympics

Disrupted staffing, security and transport are big businesses’ top concerns about the London 2012 Games, a new piece of research into the likely effect of the Olympics has revealed.

Almost half the companies asked said they believed staffing could be a problem during the games, while 41 per cent picked security as a concern and 32 per cent were worried about transport chaos.

Despite these concerns, just one in five companies intends to review their business continuity plans – raising fears over whether they are really prepared.

The figures are from a Deloitte survey of 200 large companies on their readiness for the Games. Two-thirds of those questioned were based in London.

The study comes as an investigation was launched into claims that cuddly toy versions of the Olympic mascots are being made by workers suffering poor conditions in a Chinese factory.

Golden Bear, based in Shropshire, is producing Olympic products based on Wenlock and Mandeville – the official mascots of the Olympics and Paralympics.

But an inquiry has been launched into allegations that workers at the Chinese factory which is manufacturing the toys is breaching workers’ rights.

Both the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and Golden Bear are investigating claims that workers are labouring for up to 11.5 hours a day, for as little as 26p an hour.

A London 2012 spokesman said it was taking the allegations “extremely seriously”.
