Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce chief executive Len Cruddas said: “Initially you think that’s a good idea but when you start to think a bit more, there are a lot of reasons why not.

“Some yellow lines are there for safety reasons and another thought that comes to mind is that it would be practically impossible to manage, creating some sort of horrendous bureaucracy behind it.

“We would rather have a proper review of where we need double yellow lines and where we don’t.”

Leeds Council said it couldn’t comment without seeing detailed proposals while Sheffield Council said it was unable to respond.
