Drivers’ call over rising petrol prices

THE Government is to face calls to act to tackle high petrol prices after more than 100,000 angry motorists signed a petition.

MPs are to debate the soaring cost of fuel which are causing “immense difficulties” for businesses and hitting families already struggling to make ends meet.

The debate on November 15 comes after more than 107,000 people signed an e-petition warning that the cost of motoring was “crippling our economy” and called on the Government to scrap planned future increases in fuel duty and create a price stabiliser mechanism.

MPs will stop short of demanding a cut in duty but will urge the Government to “examine ways of working with industry” to ensure falls in oil prices are passed on to motorists.

They will also call on Ministers to consider introducing a price stabilisation mechanism to try to avoid wild fluctuations in pump prices.

Several Yorkshire MPs have backed the motion, including Brigg and Goole’s Andrew Percy, Colne Valley’s Jason McCartney, Beverley and Holderness’s Graham Stuart and Keighley’s Kris Hopkins.

Motorists in rural areas have been particularly hard hit by high petrol and diesel prices in recent years, with residents and businesses more reliant on their car to get around, while many haulage firms have also been badly affected.
