Mrs Morgan visited The Mirfield Free Grammar School today as part of a day of campaigning in West Yorkshire.

She said: “I really welcome The Yorkshire Post’s manifesto suggestions on education, I think that’s great.

“I think the first step is local areas saying ‘we’ve got some good schools, but we want more’.

“Mirfield is an outstanding school and talking to students has been inspirational but what I want is every student in Yorkshire to have this opportunity, for every child to have the best start in life.”

As a region, Yorkshire has long struggled to match academic standards seen in other parts of the country.

Mrs Morgan said school leadership, increasing the number of young people pursuing a teaching career and “not accepting failure” were the keys to driving up standards.
