Ex-major takes his seat

NEW Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis has taken up his seat in the House of Commons after his by-election victory.

The 38-year-old former major in the Parachute Regiment received loud cheers from the Labour benches as he took his seat in the chamber yesterday.

He was led in by Labour colleagues Michael Dugher, MP for Barnsley East, and Angela Smith, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, before vowing his allegiance to the Queen and signing the MPs’ register.

Mr Jarvis resigned from the Parachute Regiment so he could run for Labour in last week’s by-election, where the Liberal Democrats were left languishing in sixth place.
