Four to fight for council seat vacated by crime tsar

FOUR candidates have put themselves forward for the by-election triggered by the resignation of West Yorkshire’s first Police and Crime Commissioner from his council seat.

The three major parties and the UK Independence Party will all contest the seat on Wakefield Council.

Annemarie Glover will stand for the Conservatives against Richard Forster for the Labour Party, Liberal Democrat candidate Mark Goodair and Ukip’s Nathan Garbutt.

The by-election in the Castleford and Glasshoughton ward follows the resignation of Mark Burns-Williamson.

Mr Burns-Williamson won the race to become West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner in November.

He had been a Labour councillor for Castleford and Glasshoughton since 1998.

When the seat was last contested in 2012, he took more than 76 per cent of the vote, winning by a margin of more than 1,800 votes over the Ukip candidate, Ali Bullivant.

Voting will take place on Thursday, February 21, with the result due to be announced the following day.

The ward’s two other current councillors are Labour’s Denise Jeffery and Tony Wallis.
