Free parking ended to save money

FREE car parking for shoppers, which has been on offer in a Yorkshire town for more than two years, is about to be scrapped as part of a council’s austerity measures.

People visiting Barnsley have been able to use council car parks in the town centre with no charge on Saturdays since November 2008.

But Barnsley Council said yesterday that would end in order to meet the savings required following the Government’s Spending Review, which mean it is pursuing a “minimum council”.

A spokesman said: “Subject to approval of the budget by full council on March 10, visitors to the town centre will have to pay for off street parking from Saturday, April 2.

“Although the reasons behind the trial are still relevant, the council’s financial situation from April, arising from severe cuts from central Government, is such that it cannot afford to continue the offer.”
