Fresh hope over policy aimed at curbing street drinking in Leeds suburb

MORE than 150 people have responded to a public consultation on proposals aimed at cutting the number of off-licences in and around a Leeds street which is plagued by drunks.

The consultation on a proposed Cumulative Impact Police for Armley Town Street was launched in February and ended on Friday.

If introduced, The Cumulative Impact Policy would make it much more difficult for new off-licences to be given permission to open in and around Town Street.

Leeds City Council will review comments made during the consultation and produce a report for next month’s licensing committee meeting.

Members of the licensing committee will then refer the decision on introducing a Cumulative Impact Policy for Armley Town Street to Leeds City Council’s full council meeting in June.

Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves said: “With 156 responses received it is safe to say that the consultation for Armley’s Cumulative Impact Policy was a success.

“The next steps will ensure that the palpable feeling on there being no more off-licenses in the area around Armley Town Street is put into an effective policy.

“We need a Cumulative Impact Policy now more than ever, with a yet another off-licence application being put before the licensing committee in the next few weeks.”

Miss Reeves added: “I certainly hope Leeds City Council listens to the clear message local residents have given on this matter and carry through this proposal to ensure that applications to sell alcohol on and around Armley Town Street are given the high level of scrutiny they deserve.”

There has been increasing concern about alcohol-fuelled anti-social behaviour in Town Street, with various crackdowns by the police and the authorities having limited success.
